Preservation and Restoration of The Bolling Haxall House

Did you know . . .
The Woman's Club saved the Bolling Haxall House from the fate of many of its now demolished Franklin Street neighbors? In 1900, the board of The Woman's Club made history in Richmond financial circles by purchasing the House for its permanent headquarters. Little did Club members at the time know that they were establishing a preservation precedent by transforming a private residence into the working headquarters of a thriving organization. With this one dramatic move, the Club not only saved the house from demolition, but also championed the concept of adaptive re-use long before it became fashionable. The Woman's Club has taken an architecturally significant building and adapted it to modern needs without compromising its architectural integrity.

Reasons to Preserve The Bolling Haxall House

The Bolling Haxall House is included in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Historic Landmark.

The Bolling Haxall House is considered by architectural historians to be one of the best examples of the Italian Villa style remaining in Richmond.

The Bolling Haxall House enables The Woman's Club to maintain its important role in the community: offering scholarship awards to local students, promoting arts and education through organizations that use the auditorium at minimal costs, and carefully preserving an important Richmond landmark which draws people downtown.

2. Provide regular guided tours of the property for the general public.
3. Encourage the use of The House as a community resource and to promote activities, which inform the public of the historical significance of the property.
